Women’s Hair Loss explained (FPB)
Hair loss in women is more common than you may think, and the social and psychological implications can be far more adverse in some cases. We understand that a woman’s hair can be a major identifying feminine feature and when it starts to thin or fall out, the effects can be devastating.
We also have many patients whose hair has simply lost quality and texture due to the stresses of pregnancy or other environmental and lifestyle factors. As our solution is 100% natural, we’ve been popular with women who dream of thick, lustrous and glossy hair but do not want to ruin their hair via application of potent chemicals, using hair extensions or by undergoing invasive surgical procedures.
Statistically speaking, over 40% of women will experience some form of hair loss by the age of 60.
Female Pattern Baldness can range from general thinning all over the scalp, while the frontal hairline is maintained, to moderate hair loss throughout the crown of the head. Whilst hair loss rarely progresses to near or total baldness in women, full-blown alopecia areata can occur in both men and women.
The incidence of androgenic alopecia among women is thought to be lowest in the late twenties, indicating earliest onset of the condition, followed by a gradual increase until peak incidence occurs at 50 years of age and over.
Although testosterone is present in minimal amounts in females, even slight changes to the established balance can result in excess DHT (dihydrotestosterone) production, where this is thought to be the leading cause of hair loss.
What You Should Know About The Hair Life Cycle
A typical hair grows from its follicle at an average rate of about 1.5 cm per month. Hair growth is cyclic and passes through three main stages: the growth stage, referred to as the 'anagen phase', a period of rest known as the 'catagen phase', and the final shedding stage, or 'telogen phase'.
Each hair will grow for a period of between three to five years, then enter the transitional catagen phase for about two weeks before commencing the final telogen phase for a period of anywhere between three to six months. After the hair is shed and telogen phase concludes, new hair will soon begin growing in its place and the cycle renews. At any time, approximately 75% to 85% of the total hair on the scalp will be in a period of growth and between 15% to 25% will be resting. Baldness occurs when no new hair grows in place of hair that has fallen out.
When you have hair loss in your genetic makeup, it is very common for your hair to experience a growth stage of literally several months instead of the typical 3 to 5 years. This way, your hair is reaching the “shedding stage” a lot quicker than usual.
Causes of Hair Loss in Women
Apart from genetic causes of hair loss, other major contributing factors in women may include changes to hormone levels, post-pregnancy, and menopause as well as lifestyle factors such as excessive use of hair dyes, straighteners, perms and hair products. Other lifestyle factors include a poor diet and stress levels.
Today's modern civilisation has introduced various environmental problems that can inflict hair weakness and distress. Factors that affect the health of your hair include air pollution, artificial lighting, dry air and harmful UV rays.
Lifestyle factors that can damage your hair and promote hair loss include inappropriate dietary supplements, harsh hair care products bought over the counter, poor diet, medications and daily stress levels.
Other Possible Causes of Hair Loss in Women
There is a wide range of conditions which may cause or generate hair loss, these of which include:

- Vitamin and/or mineral deficiency (particularly zinc and iron)

The Ideal Solution - A Hair Analysis Consultation
SRS Hair Clinic will conduct a one-of-a-kind microscopic hair examination to determine the exact cause of your hair loss using two different microscopes.
Under the first microscope, the technician will look deep into a hair sample to see what (if any) deformation there is at the root of your hair.
The second microscope will then narrow in on a small section of your scalp to determine the density of hair growth and assess the general condition of your hair and scalp, as well as to examine how advanced the problem has become.
With the use of our microscopes, along with knowledge of your lifestyle habits and any genetic predispositions you may have, we will provide you with a total understanding of what is resulting in the loss of your hair.
We will also provide you with insight on how many hair care and styling products can actually encourage the loss of your hair on a consistent basis as well as to provide you with recommendations for safer and less harmful alternatives.
