Hair Loss in Men

We understand that losing your hair can be daunting.

It can cause you a lot of distress and lead to a loss of confidence. You may have tried altering your hair style to conceal changes in your hair density, and perhaps you’ve already tried different solutions to fix your hair problem without success.

At SRS Hair Clinic, it’s our job to make you feel as comfortable as possible and do a full analysis of your scalp, hair, lifestyle and any other medical conditions which may have a bearing on your hair loss.

Men’s Hair Loss Explained

Men’s hair loss comes in all different types and forms, with the most common being a receding hairline, thinning crown, or bald spots. Male Pattern Baldness (also referred to as MBP or ‘androgenic alopecia’) is the most common form of hair loss to affect males and makes up over 90% of cases worldwide.

The biggest cause of hair loss in both genders, however, is predominantly a sensitivity of the hair follicles to the androgenic hormone dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

This is a type of waste product of our metabolism that binds onto the hair follicle, cuts off its blood and nutrient supply and therefore causes it to shrink so that it ceases to grow and falls out as a result.

Other conditions that may contribute to hair loss are scalp problems such as itchiness, redness, dandruff or excess oiliness or dryness. Healthy hair can only grow on a healthy base, so a clear scalp is of utmost importance for the development of new hair.

Hair loss has been known to have lasting psychological effects and that’s why we make it our purpose to assist you during what may be a time of distress.

Body image and self-esteem also play important roles in the psychology of hair loss, with many affected individuals experiencing major changes to their perception of their physical appearance and identity following loss of hair. This may lead to the development of other related issues affecting ability to express your emotions or engage in social interactions with others.

Causes of Hair Loss in Men

Genetics

The genes thought to be responsible for hair loss may potentially be sex-linked, suggesting that it is a hereditary phenomenon particularly dominated by an individual’s maternal line. This leads to irregular hormone levels in affected individuals, where quantities of the enzyme 5-alpha reductase have been found to be higher than per usual in people with thinning hair.

This enzyme is responsible for converting the male sex hormone testosterone into the form dihydrotestosterone, or DHT, in both males and females. DHT is known to bind to hair follicles, thereby inhibiting their growth and leading to hair loss over time.

Environmental

Aside from genetic predispositions to hair loss, today’s modern civilisation has introduced various environmental problems that damage not only the planet, but can also wreak havoc on your hair. Factors that affect the health of your hair include air pollution, artificial lighting, dry air and harmful UV rays.

Lifestyle

Lifestyle factors that can damage your hair and promote hair loss include unsuitable dietary supplements, harsh hair care products, poor diet, different medications and daily stress levels.

SRS Hair Analysis

SRS Hair Clinic will conduct a one-of-a-kind microscopic hair examination to determine the exact cause of your hair loss using two different microscopes.

Under the first microscope, the technician will look deep into a hair sample to see what (if any) deformation there is at the root of your hair.

The second microscope will then narrow in on a small section of your scalp to determine the density of hair growth and assess the general condition of your hair and scalp, as well as to examine how advanced the problem has become.

Through the use of our microscopes and a deeper look into your lifestyle habits and genetic predispositions, we will be able to determine the exact cause of the loss of your “crowning glory”.
